Highways

To a lot of people highway means freedom. And that’s understandable. The majority of people use a highway to commute between major cities and or regional areas. Riding the highway generally means holidays, travel, events, adventure and good times at the other end of the trip.

It doesn’t feel so free if you come off your motorcycle, do the face plant into the asphalt however. Nor is it very adventurous when time comes to fork out your hard-earned for repairs to the said vehicle.

Also, highways have all manner of crosses, flowers, teddy bears and other items signifying deaths that have happened as a result of accidents. None of those things ring the bells of freedom and joy. The opposite actually, those are sad little shrines to death, destruction and heartbreak.

Highways are like life. They can indeed be free and lovely, joyous and beautiful. You can meet and pick up the love of your life on a highway. But, just like life they can turn. And when they do, it can end bad. Real bad. People get monstered, molested and abused. They fight and die on highways. Like life.

You could go as far as to say that indeed a highway is a reflection of life. Look at the way most highway start off. Most of them started off as nothing more than dirt tracks, then, as populations grew so did the highways improve. Like life, the more people you know, the more you learn, the better you become.

Outlaws and bad men ride the highways. How many have you bumped into stopping for petrol, getting something to eat or just having a break from driving? You wouldn’t know. Just like in your day-to-day life, you never really know who you’re talking to, do you?

And, at the risk of stating the obvious, all highways have a beginning and an end.

So what’s the point of this message? Simply this. Your life, my life, every life, will eventually come up to a Road Ends sign. And you’ll look back on your trip, and you will either be happy or sad about it.

You know what though? It’s your highway, your trip and your destination. Where are you going? How’s the trip working out for you so far? Is it time to maybe speed up, slow down, relax, get a little more intense? Start humming a tune maybe. Or is it a case of stop humming and get serious? Because you know what? The way life has been for you this far will be the way it will keep going to the end, unless …

Until tomorrow,
